How Can I Get a Driving License in China

1. Temporary Driving Permit – Fast & Convenient (But Limited)

If you’re visiting China for a short period and already have a valid foreign driver’s license, you can apply for a temporary driving permit. No tests are required, and in cities like Beijing or Shanghai, some airports even provide on-site service counters that process these permits in under 30 minutes. 

✅ Valid for: 3 months to 1 year (depending on your visa) 
✅ Requirements: Passport with valid visa, original driver’s license, translation of the license, ID photos 
❌ Limitation: You can only drive rental vehicles. Driving a private car – even a friend’s – is not allowed under this permit. 

Tip: If you’re planning to drive a friend’s car or buy your own, skip the temporary permit and go for the long-term license option instead. 

2. Convert Your Foreign License for Long-term Use

For foreigners staying in China for more than 90 days – such as expats, students (X1 visa), or work visa holders — converting your foreign license is the most practical solution. The process includes: 

• • A basic medical check (done at designated hospitals) 
  • A written theory test (available in multiple languages, including English) 
  • No road test is needed 

Once approved, you’ll get a Chinese driver’s license valid for 6 years, with simple renewals thereafter. 

Tip: You can find online practice platforms with mock theory questions to prepare for the test. Most applicants pass on the first try. 

3. Start from Scratch: Learn to Drive in China

Don’t have a license yet? You can enroll in a local Chinese driving school like any resident. The process includes:

  • Practical training & driving test
  • Usually takes 1 to 3 months, depending on how often you take lessons 

This option is open to any foreigner with a valid visa, regardless of previous driving experience.

Bonus Tip: Three-Month Local License for Residents

Some foreigners, especially those in China long-term, apply for a three-month temporary license by passing only the theory test at the local vehicle management bureau (车管所, China’s equivalent of the DMV).
